Trip Report: Emergency Relief for Refugees Fleeing ISIS

Here’s a quick report from Pauline and Nihad, the Horizons staff members based in Beirut who took a 10 day emergency relief trip to Turkey to share the gospel with, and aid, the Syrian refugees fleeing from the ISIS attack on Kobani:

——
1. We bought food and everyday use products for the refugees.
2. We were making sure to spread the good news to these people before distributing them. Nihad with the males and Pauline with the females.
3. We visited several regions.
4. We were also serving very near the border between Turkey and Syria, in a place called Curus, where the Kobani people were first fleeing from ISIS.
5. We were doing house visits at night.
6. We experienced several miracles, of God healing sicknesses and diseases.
7. We saw tears flowing from their eyes while we were witnessing and praying for them.
8. Many received Christ in their lives.
9. We stayed in Curus for 4 days and then went to Orfa for 1 day, 2 days in Antakya (The biblical city of Antioch) followed by couple of hours in Istanbul where we were encouraging the believers for their ministry and praying for them.
10. Not only this, but to our surprise God had more in mind. He opened up so many other doors for us to reach to the Turkish people too. Pauline was witnessing to taxi drivers in buses and in many shops and restaurants we were going to, and all were Turkish Muslims. many other people were contacting us, knowing we are in Turkey, to come and visit us. They were listening with open hearts and receiving the good news with gladness.
11. The experiences and God’s goodness towards us and others are many – too many to count!
12. Overall we saw harvest and was a glorious fruitful mission for us.
——

Thank you so much, all of you who prayed and donated, giving these refugees a chance to both see the love of Christ tangibly demonstrated and also to hear the gospel for the first time in their lives!

Your Prayers are Working

Would you pray differently if you knew that your prayers were making an amazing difference?
Well guess what? They are!
The Pray4MENA community is pretty small – just a few hundred people that receive daily or weekly updates. But the Lord is responding to these prayers by extending His hand of healing and salvation!

Here are 17 of the results of prayer in September, at Horizons’ Beirut ministry center:

  1. Healing from nightmares.
  2. Healing from a broken leg.
  3. Healing from headaches.
  4. A father changed the way he treats his daughter.
  5. A miracle saved someone from being burned in a fire.
  6. A man was freed from jail as a result of prayer.
  7. A woman’s womb was healed.
  8. A child was delivered from chronic fear.
  9. After prayer, a girl named Y was able to forgive someone who had hurt her, with all her heart.
  10. God saved someone from an accident, right after being prayed for.
  11. A girl named K was healed from stomach aches.
  12. N’s prayers were answered after praying for her dad who was unable to work.
  13. A girl named H prayed for the healing of her grandma, who was healed.
  14. Z’s prayers to find a job were answered, and
  15. so were H’s prayers, for her daughter to find a job.
  16. M’s husband was healed of a sickness.
  17. A’s daughter’s ear was healed.

All of these answers to prayer are testimonies – they are signs that point to Christ and wonders that reveal God’s glory and majesty!
Yet God is not only healing bodies and helping people find jobs – he’s also saving souls!

As ISIS is killing and destroying, God is saving people in this region. Every month we are seeing dozens of Syrian refugees proclaim faith in Christ! Yet, this is not enough – we believe that God is going to do greater things! Would you join us in prayer for this?
Thank you for your prayers – they are making an amazing difference!!

Urgent Need: Relief for Kurds fleeing ISIS to Turkey

This weekend, Multiple Tens of thousands of Kurds fleeing an ISIS advance amassed on the Turkish border, in terrible conditions, some even reported to have died of thirst. Turkey has now opened the border, allowing 66,000 Kurds to enter within 24 hours – a number that has since grown to over 130,000.

Many of these people are fleeing from Kobane, where up to 200,000 internally displaced people have already been seeking refuge, so there will likely be even more pressure on the border very soon.

Urgent Appeal from Evangelicals in Lebanon and Syria

Last week, the Supreme Council of the Evangelical Community in Syria and Lebanon released an urgent appeal to Evangelical organizations globally, desperately asking for help with the current situation in the Middle East, which they call an “existential threat facing the future of Middle Eastern Minorities, as well as moderate Muslim minorities in the region.

Please read this appeal and act in whatever way you can!

The Biggest Miracle: Repentance

“Farida” was plagued with ever-increasing chronic back pain, as the cartilage between four of her lumbar vertebrae began breaking down. Sometimes she’d be bedridden for 2 months straight, unable to walk more than a few steps. Farida came to the Center in Beirut, heard the gospel, and received prayer for her back. It was miraculously healed, and now has been pain-free for several months! She has been attending discipleship classes at the Center and proclaims her faith in Christ, and her testimony of healing, to many.

But even though she’s experienced this miracle, and even though she believes in Jesus, she still lacks something very important: repentance.

Farida believes she is a good person, and that she was a good person even before she was a believer. She says things like “my heard is good,” or, “I’ve never hurt anyone,” and she doesn’t acknowledge that she was, or is a sinner. She has accepted the “free gift of salvation” in Christ, but she doesn’t really understand what Christ has saved her from.

This certainly is connected with her culture’s view of sin, as bad deeds that can be outweighed or even erased by good deeds. In her culture, “sin” is really only used to talk about the “big sins” like theft, adultery, and murder, whereas coveting, lust, and hatred slip under the radar. But the biblical understanding of the fallenness and rebellious heart of man is a whole different paradigm that is, frankly, hard to swallow.

Yet, this bitter pill of recognizing the dark and terrible sin of our own heart is necessary to understanding what Christ did for us, and is the only way to experience true repentance. Otherwise, it’s as if we’re saying “sorry” to God for something we feel is not really a big deal.

God does many miracles in people’s lives around the world. But I think the biggest one is repentance. The miracle of repentance is what sets the stage for the Messiah, and allows him to work his transformation in the lives of humans.

“Lord God, loving Father, we ask that you would bring a wave of conviction of sin throughout MENA, that millions would turn to you and be healed. We pray also for Farida, that you would complete the good work you’ve begun in her, and help her to become aware of her sin, repent of it from the bottom of her heart, and receive you abundant healing power in her life. Amen.”

Shattered Lives

Lives are being shattered all over the world. God knows them all, though we only get glimpses of them through the media. The eyes of the world are on the Middle East, where horrible tragedies are one-upped by new conflicts that steal the headlines.

There’s a war in Syria that has displaced millions, and one in four refugee families are now provided for by a female sole provider. There are refugee camps devoted just to war widows, and women who have no clue whether their husbands are alive wait there.

These women had homes, they had businesses, they had cars, their kids had schools, and now many of them have nothing but shattered pieces of their former lives. They are incredibly vulnerable, and there is no shortage of opportunists who take advantage of their situation. Please pray for them, that God would restore not only their physical lives, but also that they would find new, eternal lives in Christ.

In Iraq, ISIS is tightening their grip on the areas they now control, driving out multiple thousands of additional Christians, and marking their property to be seized.

In Gaza, the death toll has risen above 1,000, only temporarily stopped for a ceasefire. Entire city blocks of Gaza have already been leveled, while Hamas continues to desperately fire rockets with barely any results to show for it. People around the world are taking sides on a political level. But I just want to pray for all the individuals whose lives are being shattered by these events.

In addition to praying for these individuals, I encourage you to find some way to do something about it, even in a small way. Their greatest need is the gospel, so find a way to share it!

Remodeling Almost Done!

Since we began remodeling our new expansion facility in Beirut, tons of exciting things have happened:

1. Horizons’ President, Georges Houssney filmed 26 teaching episodes for Satellite TV in front of a live studio audience in Beirut.

2. Horizons’ MENA team hosted the first-ever Eastern Staff Summit, bringing staff from 8 nations together.

3. People have been coming to Christ at the Beirut center in increasing rates – in June alone there have been over 50 proclamations of faith in Christ!!!

4. The MENA team has added new staff, including a Discipleship Coordinator, a Women’s Ministry Coordinator, and an Assistant to the MENA Regional Director.

Meanwhile, we have been spending the rest of our time preparing the expansion facility in order to:

1. Serve as the headquarters for the MENA team, as we prepare for expansion throughout the region.

2. Provide space for 1-to-1 discipleship in a bookshop/café setting.

3. Provide an extra classroom for discipleship classes and smaller meetings.

We’re not quite done yet, but here are some pics of our progress so far!
